The overall aim is to ensure that producer/partner organizations have the capacity to produce food that meets WTO and EU standards, in three key areas: food safety, phytosanitary requirements and product quality. Once BiH production reaches sufficient consistency and quality, buyers will likely come calling. To expand on this idea, sustainability begins with the market. FARMA staff will work with BiH producers and processors initially to introduce the key elements of market demand — quality, quantity, and reliability, among others.
FARMA will assist producer/partner organizations to meet relevant standards and obtain certification to have sounder business practices and therefore achieve anticipated food safety and environmental benefits as well as access EU markets. This will be done through direct support to Producer/partner organizations as well as initiatives that facilitate policy reform and institutional strengthening which will lead to more rapid and effective adoption of QMS and standards such as HACCP, ISO standards, GlobalGAP, and organic. A comprehensive set of activities to align the development of entity and state legislation, for example on organic production aligned with the EU acquis and assistance to Producer/partner organizations to meet these requirements will be initiated by the project.
